“Burning Bridges” by Amy Shindler, Directed by Sharren Read

3rd-13th April 2024

Kate, and Dan (born in the 90s), are professional colleagues and newlyweds. They invite Kate’s younger sister, Sarah, who is autistic for a two week visit. However Sarah has some major surprises for them and things quickly spin out of control. Life quickly spirals into a nightmare of accusation and intrigue.

A love triangle with a dangerous twist, this moving and funny play explores the everyday dilemmas of a young woman living with autism: what to eat, “I don’t eat Yellow“; what to watch on TV, “Babylon 5“; and how to seduce your sister’s husband with a piece of cake “Guess what I’m thinking of now”

Directors message:- As I reflect on the journey of bringing this play to life, it is important to acknowledge that we all understood that telling this story required an awareness and empathy with our neuro-diverse community. We embarked on a journey whereby we researched and consulted with experts and individuals who live with autism.

We listened to their stories, gaining valuable insights. This however, is not a play about being neuro-diverse, although one of the characters lives with autism. That means she processes the world in a different way from most of us. This is not wrong, but does require acceptance.

—————————————————————————————————–

‘Autism is not a disease. Don’t try to cure us. Try to understand us’ – Brian R. King

‘Autism is not a tragedy. Ignorance is a tragedy’ – Kim Stagliano

——————————————————————————————–

“12 Angry Jurors” written by Reginald Rose, Directed by Warren Bates

14th – 25th November 2023

Set in a courthouse in a major New Zealand city. A diverse jury, representing a wide cross-section of the community, must decide the fate of an accused young man.

A 16 year old youth has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance“, mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room on one of the hottest days of the year. It looks like an open-and-shut case – until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts.

“We have noting to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing“. But personal it does become, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated and the jurors become 12 angry men and women.

The jurors’ final verdict and how they reach it makes for intense scenes that will electrify you and keep you on the edge of your seat.

“The Woman in Black” Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the book by Susan Hill, Directed by Heather Harrison

27th October – 6th November 2004

The action takes place on the stage of a Victorian style theatre. “It was nine-thirty on Christmas Eve …” so begins Arthur Kipps account of the terrible events that dramatically altered his life. AS a young lawyer he was sent north by his London firm to settle the estate of an elderly recluse in isolated, foggy Eelmarsh House. What transpired there has haunted him ever since. Now middle-aged and retired, Kipps hires a theatre and the services of an actor to help him re-enact and thereby hopefully exorcise the ghostly event which befell him many years previously with horrifyingly tragic results. As the story unfolds the house gives up its secrets but unleashes a new terror. This play is a mix of storyteller theatre, actors and audience imagination. WE hope you have yours with you tonight, and that you allow it full rein.

Cast: Ross Wisnewski (Arthur Kipps); Morris West (The Actor);

This is the first performance in the new Cue Theatre, it was as good if not better than expected. The large stage and workshop areas allow for more expansive scenery to be used and the lighting and sound systems are a big improvement.

Joan Ertel was the narrator of the story that many of us read in our childhood. She linked the scenes with readings from the book, while the stagehands moved the scenery behind the closed curtain. Alice chases the White Rabbit and falls down the rabbit hole, into a fantasy world where little makes sense…. at first. It’s all a dream on her birthday, but the dream takes over and Alice has all sorts of wonderful encounters with the characters she meets on her way. From the Cheshire Cat, with its huge grin to the croquet game using flamingos as mallets, to her trial for stealing the tarts from the Queen of Hearts, Alice followed her dreams.

The casting was well done with a good mix of old hands and some new talent, which bodes well for the future. From young children to the not so you, they all seemed comfortable in their parts… and some of them didn’t need to act much as they fitted their roles so well.

Comment must be made of the costumes and set design

Cast: Sasha Antunovic (Alice); Joanna Lockhart (smaller Alice); Selina Mackie (Queen of Hearts); Alistair Nelson (King of Hearts); Barry Boekman (Mock Turtle);

Last Night in the Old Cue

“The Occasion” – 26 years ago, the first production in a newly refurbished Cue Theatre was performed. That was “The Poker Session” directed by Heather Harrison.

Tonight we are delighted to re-present, “Home” another production by Heather Harrison to represent all the excellent plays which have been done here. It is with some regrets but a lot of excitement that we now look forward to the rebuilding of the Cue – and the opportunity to enter a new era in the growth of a new Cue

Cast: David Ertel (Harry); Ross Wisnewski (Jack); Liz Hughes (Margorie); Verna Prankerd (Kathleen); Morris West (Alfred)

We are delighted to have the assistance of Michael Stevenson and Steven Brower international artists, whose exhibition “Genealogy” is currently on display at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery

“Social Climbers” by Roger Hall, Directed by David Ertel

13th – 23rd May 1998

This is a Kiwi play with possums on a corrugated iron roof and a group of Kiwi women stuck in a bush hut with little to do

Five secondary School teachers and one of their daughters are trapped by bad weather in a small hut during a mid-term break tramp to escape the pressures of teaching. However other pressures come to bear as they begin to get on each other’s nerves.

As is Roger Hall’s style, this play has humourous interaction between ordinary people and some great one liners dotted through the producrtion.

Cast: Linda Meehan (Maxine); Cathy Morris (Emily); Kerryn Bocock (art student daughter); Jane Blinkhorne (Anne); Valda Upson (Susan); Liz Hughes (Kath)
