The passion and scandal of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel, The Great Gatsby, written in 1925 and set in post-World War I America, are brilliantly brought to the stage in this adaptation by leading New Zealand playwright, Ken Duncum. The decadence, the selfishness, the ostentation and the carelessness of the era combine with the music and dance of the Roaring 20s to bring sizzling theatre entertainment at its best. The story will be familiar to most, with its depiction of the glamour and decadence of post-WWI America - the era of the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age–with Fitzgerald’s narrative describing the careless ostentation of the nouveau-riche. As it happened, his words were in fact prophetic, as the novel foreshadowed the Wall Street Crash and the resulting Great Depression. Against the glittering façade of Long Island’s wealthy, their mansions and endless parties, the story of Jay Gatsby’s obsessive love for his former sweetheart, Daisy Buchanan, plays out in all its romance, drama and tragedy. The Great Gatsby is ultimately a love story, but it is also a morality tale about the excesses of 1920s America. Theatre-goers might wish to contemplate theparallels with the current world economic crisis.
The cast is: Cameron Curd playing Jay Gatsby; Michelle Rawlinson as Daisy Buchanan; Travis Graham, Tom Buchanan; Hendrikus De Vaan, Nick Carraway; Katherine Whaley, Jordan Baker; Erik Keen, Older Nick; Trudie Ashford, Myrtle Wilson; John Bellomo, George Wilson and Katherine Wolfe, Tracee Pigott and Tanaka Utete are all playing character roles.
The set design has already been completed by Cue Theatre's set designer and builder Alan Stevenson and will result in a set which is aesthetically stunning and theatrically exciting.
The choreographer is well- known New Plymouth dancer and member of Val Deakin Dance Theatre Davina Moffat and the resulting dance scenes promise to be spectacular.PERFORMANCE DATES
